Kurumaya Genji
About This Spot
Stepping into Kurumaya Genji feels like coming home to a quiet corner of northern Japan where the rhythm slows just enough to savor every moment. Nestled in Wakkanai, this shabu-shabu and regional Japanese eatery welcomes you with an inviting warmth — from the friendly greetings of its staff to the gentle hum of conversation that fills the cozy space. It’s a place where the sea’s bounty is celebrated with care and a personal touch, making each visit feel like an intimate encounter with Hokkaido’s freshest flavors.
The atmosphere here is comfortably unpretentious, yet there’s a subtle attentiveness that speaks to a long tradition of hospitality. Whether you’re sitting down for a gentle dip of tender octopus into simmering broth or indulging in a beautifully arranged sashimi plate, the pace invites you to slow down and truly engage with the experience. The lively spirit of the mamasan and the attentive service create a welcoming energy without feeling overwhelming, allowing the food and local stories to take center stage.
Dining at Kurumaya Genji is never just about the meal; it’s a quiet celebration of Wakkanai’s rich coastal heritage. The fresh seafood arrives with a simplicity that highlights its natural quality—whether it’s a delicately cooked snow crab claw or the silky softness of live scallop sashimi. There’s a thoughtful layering of textures and warmth, especially when the shabu-shabu pot bubbles gently between new friends or family. Ending the meal with a steaming bowl of noodles or savoring a richer grilled dish offers a satisfying close to the shared experience.
This is the kind of place where locals gather to enjoy treasured dishes passed down through generations and where visitors can feel the authentic pulse of Hokkaido’s northern edge. It’s a restaurant less about spectacle and more about human moments—comfort, connection, and the quiet joy of well-crafted food in good company.

Tako Shabu is a speciality of Wakkanai, and it's great. The mamasan running the place is outgoing and fun and the food is fantastic. Sashimi, crab and grilled fish are also on the menu and a part of the high- end set meal. Highly recommended - it is the best in Wakkanai.

3.85 - If you find yourself in Wakkanai, it’s worth trying their local "Tako" hotpot. While there’s nothing particularly special about it, it’s a nice way to experience what the locals eat. However, the sailfin parrotfish with miso sauce was quite tasty. If you're unsure of what to eat in Wakkanai, this is definitely a solid option, especially considering the limited number of restaurants in the area.

What a wonderful place in Wakkanai. The staff was poliet and smiling, the place was cozy and food was brilliant. We were lucky to be here to try the authentic Wakkanai tako shabu (octopus shabu shabu). The seafood don and crab tempura were marvelous too. Thank you very much Kurumaya Genji.

Not bad restaurant. U can have a nice dinner here and taste local seafood. The noodle is so good! But the price is a little bit high.

First night in Wakkanai and we wanted something warm in this cold winter. Headed here for the Tako Shabu Shabu. Nice place with a wide range of food. We also had the seafood donburi. It's fresh and yummy but not much different from those we had at Kanazawa. Recommended if you want a wide range of food for the shabushabu!

This place serves Octopus shabu-shabu for lunch 2000 yen. Very good dish and must try. There were many other people driving over to eat. We walked from Wakkanai station about 10 minutes.
